The Jötnar

Primordial forces of chaos and nature

The Giants of Norse Tradition

Giants (Old Norse: jötnar, singular jötunn) are among the oldest and most powerful beings in Norse mythology. Often portrayed as chaotic forces of nature, they are frequently at odds with the Aesir and Vanir gods. Despite their name, not all giants were necessarily large in stature—though many were indeed enormous—but all were known for their tremendous strength and ancient wisdom.

Giants are big, clumsy and often evil, but there are also some good giantesses who married into Asgard. Most of the giants live in Jotunheim, one of the nine worlds. Giants' worst enemy is Thor, who with his dreaded hammer Mjölnir, has slain many giants. The most famous giants are the primeval giant Ymir, the trickster Loki, and the wise Mimir. Giants represent nature's wild chaos in opposition to the order of the gods.

The Giants, were the chief enemies of the gods, particularly the Aesir. In the Norse world, a giant was called Jotun or Iotun. There are several different types of giants. The frost-giants were the most common giants; they lived in Jotunheim, one of the nine worlds. The capital of Jotunheim was Utgard, the citadel of the frost-giants and home of Utgard-Loki or Utgardaloki. Often writers just simply called the home of the giants as Giantland.

Giantland or Jotunheim was supposedly large world, but void of actual physical geographical location. All that we know is that Giantland was east of Midgard, separated by rivers and the forest known as Jarnvid (Iron Wood). Jarnvid was inhabited by troll-wives, known as the Jarnvidjur, where they breed giants in wolf forms.

There are many places within Jotunheim other than Utgard. The giant Hrungnir lived in a frontier of Giantland, called Griotunagardar. The giant Thiassi lived on the mountain called Thrymheim, with his daughter Skadi.

The other giants were the fire giants, who lived in Muspelheim. The fire giant named Surt ruled in Muspelheim.

Note that some of the giantesses had become deified because of the their relationship with the Norse gods, like Jord, Grid, Gerd and Rind. These giantesses became Asyniur or goddesses in their own rights, so I have list some of these in this page and some in the Aesir page.

Many of the Aesir also had heritage from the giants, where at least one parent was a giant or giantess. These included Odin, Thor, Tyr and Heimdall. Perhaps the most important of these giant/god was Loki. Both of Loki’s parents come from the race of giants, yet he was considered by most as an Aesir god. Loki became the leader of the frost giants at the time of Ragnarok.

Giants and giantesses were sometimes called troll and trollwives.

Fire Giants

The fire giants dwell in Muspelheim, the realm of fire. Led by Surtr, these beings of flame are destined to play a major role in Ragnarök, when they will march against the gods and set the world ablaze. Surtr himself will battle Freyr and ultimately destroy the world with fire after the gods have fallen.

Notable Fire Giants

  • Surtr - Leader who will bring about Ragnarök with his flaming sword
  • Logi - The personification of fire itself

Frost Giants

The frost giants are the most common type of giant in Norse mythology. They originated in Niflheim, the realm of ice and mist, but most later came to dwell in Jotunheim. Their ancient wisdom often rivals that of the gods, and some (like Vafthrudnir) are known for their knowledge of the cosmos and its secrets.

Notable Frost Giants

  • Ymir - The first being from whose body the world was created
  • Thrym - Who once stole Thor's hammer
  • Skrymir - The giant who tricked Thor with illusions

Giant Relationships with the Gods

Despite the general enmity between giants and gods, their relationship is complex. Many gods, including Odin and Thor, are descended from giants through their mothers or grandmothers. Several giantesses became wives or consorts of the gods, bringing valuable alliances and abilities to Asgard.

Gods with Giant Ancestry

  • Odin - Son of Borr and the giantess Bestla
  • Thor - Son of Odin and the giantess Jörd (Earth)
  • Tyr - Possibly the son of the giant Hymir

Giant Wives of the Gods

  • Skadi - Married to Njörd as compensation for her father's death
  • Gerd - Wife of Freyr, who fell in love with her beauty
  • Grid - A giantess who helped Thor and bore him a son, Vidar
