Gerd is a radiant giantess renowned for beauty dignity and quiet strength. She is best known from the tale in which the god Freyr sees her from afar and falls deeply in love. The Tale of Freyr and Gerd
From his high seat in Asgard Freyr looks out over the worlds and sees Gerd in the halls of her family in Jotunheim. At that moment love takes hold of him so strongly that he becomes silent and sorrowful unable to rest until he wins her.
Freyr sends his servant Skirnir to speak with Gerd carrying gifts and offers of treasure. At first she refuses yet after warnings and the weight of destiny she agrees to meet Freyr in a sacred grove after a number of nights. Their meeting is described as a moment of joy and bright promise for the land.
