Hymir

Sea Giant with the Great Cauldron and Foe of Thor

Hymir the sea giant rowing with Thor on a stormy ocean

Who Is Hymir

Hymir is a grim and powerful giant in Norse mythology best known from two famous episodes. In one story he owns a huge cauldron needed by the gods to brew ale. In another he takes Thor out to sea for a dangerous fishing trip that nearly brings up the world serpent Jormungandr.

Hymir is described as stern and unfriendly. His hall is filled with giant sized drinking vessels and trophies from hunts and voyages. Even his cattle and household goods are larger and harder than those of ordinary beings reflecting his strength and the harsh world he inhabits.

Through Hymir the myths explore themes of courage, hospitality pushed to its limits, and the uneasy bargains that sometimes arise between gods and giants.

Linked to Deep Forces

Through his sea journeys and his encounter with Jormungandr, Hymir is tied to the dangerous powers beneath the waves.

The Great Cauldron of Hymir

In one tale the gods of Asgard decide to hold a great feast and brew vast amounts of ale. To do so they need a cauldron large enough for their plans. Tyr, who is Hymir's son in some traditions, tells them that his giant father owns a massive brewpot beneath the sea giants hall.

Thor and Tyr travel to Hymir's home to obtain the cauldron. After a tense visit marked by trials of strength and endurance, Thor lifts the enormous vessel onto his shoulders and carries it away. The gods then use Hymir's cauldron to brew ale for future feasts.

This story shows Hymir as a source of essential but hard won resources. His possessions are coveted even by the gods, yet they must risk his anger to take them.

Thor and Hymir Go Fishing

Another famous tale tells of Thor joining Hymir on a fishing trip. Hymir is reluctant to take him far from shore, but Thor insists and uses the head of Hymir's prized bull as bait. Together they row out into deep water where Thor hooks Jormungandr, the world serpent.

As Thor hauls the serpent up, the boat begins to strain and the sea churns violently. Fearing that the struggle will doom them all, Hymir panics and cuts the fishing line. The serpent sinks back into the depths, and Thor is left furious that his chance to kill Jormungandr has been lost.

This episode highlights Hymir's caution and fear in the face of cosmic danger, standing in contrast to Thor's fierce courage and desire to confront the greatest threats directly.
