Baugi

The Giant Who Aided Odin in the Quest for the Mead of Poetry

Baugi the giant

Who Is Baugi?

Baugi is a giant known from the tale of the Mead of Poetry, where Odin (under the name Bölverk) persuades him to help gain entry to the mountain where the mead is hidden. Baugi is the brother of Suttung, the keeper of the mead, and although he is not a villain, his loyalties and decisions shift during the tale.

Odin offers to work for Baugi after killing his nine servants, and in return, Baugi agrees to help Odin reach the mead. Baugi drills a hole into the mountain, allowing Odin to slip inside in the form of a snake.

His role may seem small, but without Baugi, Odin could not have completed one of the most important mythic quests in the Norse tradition.
