Iron Wielding Giantess and Mother of Magni

Jarnsaxa the giantess holding an iron blade

Who Is Jarnsaxa

Jarnsaxa is a giantess whose name means iron knife or iron blade. She is best known as a companion or consort of Thor and the mother of Magni, one of the strongest beings in all Norse myth. Though mentioned only briefly in the surviving sources, her presence suggests both power and deep ties between gods and giants.

In some traditions she is listed among the Jotnar who stand in opposition to the gods, while in others she is linked closely with Thor’s family and strength. Her son Magni inherits that strength, helping his father survive the crushing weight of the giant Hrungnir.

Jarnsaxa therefore occupies a unique position, bridging the worlds of gods and giants through the lineage of one of Asgard’s most powerful heirs.

Character and Nature

Iron Giantess

Her name links her closely to iron, strength, and the harsh tools and weapons of the Jotnar.

Consort of Thor

Her bond with Thor reveals rare ties between gods and giants, producing a child stronger than many divine heroes.

Mother of Magni

Her son Magni is famed for lifting Hrungnir off Thor, a feat even the gods could not match.

Jarnsaxa and the Story of Magni

The most well known reference to Jarnsaxa comes from the tale of Hrungnir, the stone giant who challenges Thor. After Thor slays Hrungnir, he becomes trapped beneath the giant’s heavy stone leg. None of the gods can lift it off him.

It is Magni, the young son of Thor and Jarnsaxa, who performs the impossible. With ease he raises the massive stone and frees his father. Thor rewards him with Hrungnir’s horse Gullfaxi.

This moment shows not only Magni’s tremendous strength but also the significance of his mother, Jarnsaxa, whose lineage clearly contributes to his power.
