Bergelmir is a key figure in Norse tradition known as the one who survived the mighty flood of Ymirs blood. When the gods ended the life of the primordial giant Ymir the flow of blood drowned almost every giant. Only Bergelmir and his wife escaped the disaster.
The pair found safety by climbing onto a wooden object often described as a box or an ark. By surviving this cosmic event they became the ancestors of the frost giants who continue to dwell in Jotunheim.
