The Golden-Haired Goddess
Sif is the Norse goddess famed for her hair of shining gold and her place as the wife of Thor. Her golden locks are often understood as a symbol of ripe fields of grain, tying her closely to the harvest and the fruitfulness of the earth.
Her most famous story begins with mischief. Loki crept up and cut off all of Sif's hair as a cruel prank. A furious Thor forced Loki to make amends, and the trickster went to the dwarfs known as the Sons of Ivaldi, who spun new hair of pure gold that would grow like her own.
That errand led to the crafting of several of the gods' greatest treasures. Sif is mother of the archer god Ullr, and by Thor she is mother of Thrud, keeping her at the heart of the family of the Æsir.
