The Sons of Ivaldi

The dwarf smiths behind three of the gods' most treasured gifts

The First Great Smiths

The Sons of Ivaldi are a family of dwarf craftsmen renowned for forging some of the earliest and finest treasures of the gods. Their skill set the standard against which all other dwarven work would be measured.

Their most famous commission came from Loki. After he mischievously cut off the golden hair of Thor's wife Sif, he was forced to make amends. He went to the Sons of Ivaldi, who spun new hair of pure gold that would grow like natural hair, and while at it crafted two more marvels: the spear Gungnir and the ship Skidbladnir.

Loki then wagered that the brothers Brokkr and Eitri could not match these treasures, a bet that led to the making of Mjölnir. Though the Sons of Ivaldi lost that contest by a narrow judgment, their gifts remained among the most prized possessions of the Æsir.
