Ullr

God of Archery, Skiing, and the Winter Hunt

Ullr, the Norse god of archery and skiing

The Winter Hunter

Ullr is the Norse god of archery, skiing, and the hunt, a master of the bow and a swift traveler over snow and ice. He is the son of the goddess Sif and the stepson of Thor, and he rules the frozen wilds where other gods seldom go.

So great is Ullr's skill on skis and with the bow that warriors called upon him before single combat, seeking his favor for a fair and well-fought duel. He was clearly an important god in the older days, for many places across Scandinavia still bear his name.

Ullr dwells in Ydalir, the Yew Dales, a fitting home for an archer since the finest bows were carved from yew wood. He stands for the hardy virtues of the north: skill, endurance, and mastery of the winter landscape.
