The Legend
Járngreipr, meaning iron grippers, are the gloves of iron that Thor must wear to wield his hammer. Mjölnir was forged with a handle that is dangerously short and searingly hot, and only with these gloves can the thunder god take a safe and certain grip upon it.
Together with the belt Megingjörð and the hammer itself, the iron gloves are counted among the three great treasures of Thor. They are as much a part of his power as the weapon they allow him to hold.
Gloves of the same kind appear when the giantess Gríðr lends Thor her own iron gloves before his journey to the hall of Geirröd, letting him catch and hurl back a glowing lump of iron that the giant flings at him.
