Vidar

The Silent God and Avenger of Odin at Ragnarök

Vidar, the silent Norse god

The Silent God

Vidar is a son of Odin and the giantess Gríðr, and one of the strongest of all the gods, second only to Thor. He is known as the silent god, a quiet and reserved figure whose importance lies not in words but in a single mighty deed still to come.

Vidar is famous for a special shoe, said to be made from all the scraps of leather that cobblers have ever trimmed and cast away. This shoe is prepared for one purpose: the moment at Ragnarök when he will avenge his father.

When the wolf Fenrir devours Odin at the final battle, Vidar strides forward. He sets his great shoe upon the wolf's lower jaw, seizes the upper, and tears Fenrir apart. As one of the surviving gods, Vidar walks the world reborn after the end.
