The Fastest of Runners
Thjalfi is a human youth who becomes the loyal servant and companion of Thor. He is the son of a farmer with whom Thor once lodged, and he entered the god's service after a mishap with one of the goats that pull Thor's chariot.
He is famed above all for his speed, being the swiftest runner in the Nine Worlds. Along with his sister Roskva, he travels with Thor on some of the god's most famous journeys, sharing in both their perils and their strange humiliations.
In the hall of Utgarda-Loki, Thjalfi races a mysterious figure named Hugi and cannot win, for Hugi is Thought itself, faster than any runner alive. Yet Thjalfi's courage is real, and in the duel with Hrungnir it is he who brings down the clay giant Mokkurkalfi.
