Tanngniost & Tanngrisnir

The roaring, snarling goats who pull Thor’s chariot across the heavens

Tanngniost and Tanngrisnir pulling Thor’s chariot

Overview

Tanngniost (“Teeth-Gnasher”) and Tanngrisnir (“Teeth-Barer”) are the legendary goats who pull Thor’s chariot. Their hooves strike sparks across the sky as they race, accompanying the thunder god on his travels through Midgard and the nine realms.

But their most extraordinary trait is their ability to be eaten and resurrected. Each night, Thor slaughters the goats, cooks them, and shares the meal with his companions — only to revive them the next morning with a touch of Mjölnir, provided their bones remain unbroken.

These goats represent power, renewal, and Thor’s ever-ready ability to travel and feast, even in the harshest conditions.

Key Roles

Pullers of the Thunder Chariot

Tanngniost and Tanngrisnir speed across the sky, their hooves sparking lightning as they carry Thor into battle and adventure.

Creatures of Endless Renewal

After being eaten each night, the goats are resurrected at dawn by Mjölnir — unless their bones have been damaged.

Central to Thor’s Journey to Utgard

When a human boy breaks a bone while feasting on one of the goats, Thor’s wrath forces the family to surrender Þjálfi and Röskva as repayment.

Bound to the Power of Mjölnir

Only Thor’s hammer can restore the goats to life, linking them directly to his divine strength and authority.
