Magni and Modi

The Sons of Thor Who Inherit His Strength and His Hammer

Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor

Heirs of the Thunder God

Magni and Modi are the sons of Thor, and together they represent the strength and courage of their mighty father carried into the next age of the world. Their names themselves mean might and courage, the two virtues most prized in the thunder god.

Magni, whose mother is the giantess Járnsaxa, is a marvel of strength even as an infant. When Thor was pinned beneath the leg of the slain giant Hrungnir and no god could lift it, the three-night-old Magni strode up and raised it with ease, saving his father.

Both brothers are counted among the young gods who survive Ragnarök. When the old world burns and Thor falls, Magni and Modi inherit their father's hammer Mjölnir and carry his strength into the green world that rises from the ashes.
