The Underworld
Helheim, also known simply as Hel, is the underworld of Norse mythology, ruled by the goddess Hel, daughter of Loki. Located in the lowest level of the Norse cosmos, it is the final destination for those who die of sickness, age, or anything other than a warrior's death in battle.
Unlike the Christian concept of Hell, Helheim is not a place of punishment, but rather a neutral realm where most souls reside after death. Those who die in battle are chosen by the Valkyries to go to either Valhalla or Folkvangr instead.
The realm is separated from the world of the living by a series of barriers, including the river Gjöll, which must be crossed via the bridge Gjallarbrú, guarded by the maiden Móðguðr.
