Hlidskjalf

The high seat of Odin, from which all the Nine Worlds can be seen

Hlidskjalf, the high seat of Odin

The Legend

Hlidskjalf is the great high seat of Odin, set within his hall in Asgard. From this throne the All-Father can look out over the whole of creation, seeing into all the Nine Worlds and observing the deeds of gods, giants, and mortals alike.

It is a seat of immense privilege, and Odin's wife Frigg is said to share it with him. From Hlidskjalf the two watch over the worlds and learn the fates unfolding across them.

The throne plays a key part in the tale of Frey. When the Vanir god climbs onto the forbidden seat and gazes into Jötunheim, he sees the radiant giantess Gerd and is struck with a love that costs him his sword. To sit upon Hlidskjalf uninvited is no small thing.
