A Duel of Wisdom
Odin's hunger for knowledge was never satisfied, and it drew him even into danger. Hearing of the giant Vafthrudnir, reputed to be the wisest of all the jötnar, Odin resolved to test his own learning against him, against the warnings of his wife Frigg.
Disguising himself as a wanderer named Gagnrad, Odin came to the giant's hall. Vafthrudnir welcomed the stranger and set the terms: the two would trade questions on the deepest secrets of the cosmos, and the one who failed to answer would lose his head.
So began a contest that ranged across the whole of creation, from the origin of the earth and sky to the fate of the gods at Ragnarök. Each answered the other truly, until Odin sprang the one question no one but himself could ever answer.
