Born of a Truce
Kvasir is the wisest being ever to exist in Norse mythology. He was born not of any parents but of peace itself. When the Æsir and the Vanir ended their long war, they sealed the truce by all spitting into a great vat, and from that mingled spittle they shaped Kvasir.
So great was his wisdom that no question could be put to him that he could not answer. He travelled far and wide throughout the worlds, teaching knowledge to gods and to mortals, and none were his equal in understanding.
His wisdom, however, led to his death. Two dwarfs, Fjalar and Galar, murdered Kvasir and drained his blood, which they brewed with honey into the Mead of Poetry. Ever after, a draught of that mead could grant the gift of verse, so that Kvasir's wisdom lived on in the words of poets.
