Gulltop

The golden-maned steed of Heimdall, guardian of the rainbow bridge

Gulltop, the golden-maned horse of Heimdall

Overview

Gulltop (Old Norse *Gulltoppr*, meaning “Golden Tuft” or “Golden Mane”) is the radiant steed ridden by Heimdall, the ever-vigilant guardian of the Bifröst bridge. Though not as frequently mentioned as Sleipnir or Gullinbursti, Gulltop is nonetheless one of the noble steeds of the gods — swift, shining, and loyal.

Heimdall, gifted with extraordinary senses and the duty of watching for threats to the gods, rides Gulltop when he must traverse the realms. The horse’s golden mane symbolizes divine brilliance and clarity — fitting for the god who sees and hears all.

During Ragnarök, Heimdall rides Gulltop into the final battle, where he will sound the Gjallarhorn and meet his destiny against Loki.
