The Divine Healer
Eir is the Norse goddess most closely associated with healing and medicine. The old sources name her plainly as the best of all physicians, skilled in the mending of wounds and the curing of sickness.
She is counted among the goddesses of Asgard, and in some tellings among the handmaidens who serve the queen Frigg. Her name itself came to mean help or mercy, fitting for a figure devoted to the relief of suffering.
Eir is also linked with a company of maidens who sit upon the hill of healing, Lyfjaberg, where those who climb to them may be cured of even the gravest of ills. To the Norse, the art of healing was itself a kind of sacred and mysterious knowledge.
