Regin

The cunning smith who reforged Gram and fostered the dragon-slayer Sigurd

Regin the smith at his forge

The Cunning Smith

Regin is one of the most memorable smiths in Norse legend, a master of the forge whose skill was matched only by his cunning. He was a son of Hreidmar, and brother to Otr and Fáfnir, a family swept up in the curse of Andvari's gold.

When his brother Fáfnir seized the cursed hoard, murdered their father, and turned himself into a dragon, Regin was left with nothing. He became foster-father to the young hero Sigurd and nursed a plan to win the gold through him.

Regin reforged the shattered sword Gram for Sigurd and urged him to slay the dragon. But he meant to betray the hero once the deed was done. Warned by birds after tasting Fáfnir's blood, Sigurd struck first and killed the treacherous smith.
