Andvari

The dwarf whose cursed treasure shaped the destinies of gods and heroes

Andvari the dwarf holding his cursed gold

Overview

Andvari is a dwarf associated with immense wealth, secrecy, and the tragic curse that spread from his treasure hoard to countless figures in Norse heroic legend. Unlike many dwarves who dwell in mountains, Andvari lived beneath a waterfall, capable of transforming into a fish to guard his riches.

His treasure became forever infamous when Loki trapped Andvari and forced him to surrender all his gold — including the magical ring Andvaranaut. In revenge, Andvari laid a powerful curse upon the ring, ensuring that it would bring destruction to whoever possessed it.

The curse spread far beyond Andvari himself, ensnaring Regin, Fáfnir, Sigurd, and entire dynasties in a cycle of greed, betrayal, and death.
